The trailer for the upcoming horror movie Passenger is currently playing in theaters, and it’s already being talked about as a contender for the scariest film of the year.
Although the footage has leaked online, we won’t be sharing it here. What we can tell you is that the teaser wastes no time setting an ominous tone: it opens with two friends driving together along a pitch-black road cutting through the woods. That setup alone is enough to raise every horror fan’s internal alarm.
The situation turns the moment one of them asks to stop for a bathroom break. They pull over, and as he’s relieved himself in the darkness, the car horn suddenly blares—one long, sustained blast. Annoyed and confused, he rushes back to the vehicle, only to discover his friend is gone.
Then things escalate fast. After the man climbs back into the car, his missing friend is violently hurled through the windshield. Barely able to speak, he rasps, “Help me,” before being dragged away by something unseen.
Panicked, the survivor floors it and tries to escape. But the road offers no relief—he repeatedly spots a figure standing at the roadside, appearing again and again in a way that feels less like coincidence and more like a trap tightening. The teaser reportedly ends with a final jump scare designed to leave audiences rattled.
According to the official synopsis: “A few weeks into their van life adventure, a young couple witnesses a horrific accident that leaves the driver dead. Soon they’re being pursued by a demonic stalker who’s impossible to outrun and follows them wherever they go.”
The Last Voyage of the Demeter director André Øvredal helms the film, with Melissa Leo, Jacob Scipio, and Lou Llobell starring.
Passenger is set to arrive on May 29. Until then, horror fans can pad out their watchlist with the best scary movies streaming right now.
