It’s only a few months until The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in theaters, marking Star Wars’ return to the big screen for the first time in six years. But if Dave Filoni is to be believed, audiences shouldn’t expect the movie to follow the same blueprint as the saga’s previous cinematic chapters.

“Episode VII was a completely different entity,” Filoni told Empire magazine. Filoni is a co-writer and second-unit director on The Mandalorian and Grogu, and also serves as Lucasfilm’s president and chief creative officer.

Reflecting on how much the franchise has shifted since the original trilogy, Filoni added: “I had dreams of Episode VII since I came out of Return of the Jedi. You were like, ‘After VI comes VII! Where’s VII?’ We’re in a completely different era of Star Wars now.”

Filoni also characterized the upcoming film as “a big celebration” of Din Djarin and Grogu—better known to many fans as “Baby Yoda.”

Plot details remain tightly under wraps, but one familiar face sounds increasingly unlikely to show up: Boba Fett. Actor Temuera Morrison recently suggested the character has been put on ice for now.

“[I’m] shelved, that’s all, like a jar of peaches. When it does get opened, I’m going to come out sweeter, darling,” Morrison said. The last time viewers saw Morrison’s Boba Fett was when The Book of Boba Fett concluded in early 2022.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is currently set to hit theaters on May 22. After that, the next Star Wars release on the calendar is the animated series Maul – Shadow Lord, which premieres on Disney Plus on April 6.
