James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow is stacking its deck with even more DC heroes. Aaron Pierre has officially joined the upcoming Superman sequel—news that lands right on the heels of his starring role as Green Lantern John Stewart in the forthcoming streaming series Lanterns.

With Pierre’s casting now confirmed (per Variety), John Stewart’s next big-screen chapter is effectively locked in—and it strongly suggests he’ll be operating as a fully realized Green Lantern by the time Lanterns concludes. The series centers on Stewart as he trains to step into the role of Earth’s protector, taking over the mantle from Hal Jordan.

One curious wrinkle: footage and early teases for Lanterns imply that Hal Jordan may not even be familiar with Guy Gardner—Nathan Fillion’s take on the brash Green Lantern who appears in Superman and is also set to pop up in Lanterns. If that dynamic holds, it could hint at unusual Lantern Corps politics—or a timeline twist—inside the new DC Universe.

Man of Tomorrow brings back David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, positioning the pair as uneasy partners forced to work together against an invasion led by Brainiac, portrayed by Lars Eidinger. The ensemble also includes Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), and Maria Gabriella de Faria (The Engineer).

From a DCU world-building standpoint, John Stewart is an intuitive choice to anchor the franchise’s Green Lantern presence—though Guy Gardner is the kind of personality who rarely lets anyone take center stage uncontested. Stewart first appeared in Green Lantern #87 in 1972, created by the legendary duo Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams. His profile skyrocketed decades later, especially in the early 2000s, when he became the primary Green Lantern for an entire generation through the animated Justice League series and its continuation, Justice League Unlimited.

Lanterns is slated to premiere in August on HBO Max. Man of Tomorrow is currently set to arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027. Until then, DC fans can keep an eye on the wider slate of upcoming movies and series still in development.
