Fans of the fantasy phenomenon Game of Thrones may be on the verge of a major milestone. Fresh reports suggest that the franchise’s first official feature-length film is now being developed. The project is expected to dive into the mythic history of House Targaryen—most likely centering on Aegon the Conqueror and his famed unification of Westeros.

Talk of a cinematic expansion first gained traction back in 2023, when news surfaced that HBO was considering a series titled Aegon’s Conquest, designed to chart the events that forged the Seven Kingdoms into one realm. Even then, insiders speculated that a large-scale film could serve as the ideal prologue, introducing the story with the scope only a theatrical release can deliver.

A Seasoned Writer Is Handling the Screenplay

According to The Wrap, the film is indeed in active development. The screenplay is being written by Beau Willimon, best known as the creator of the political drama House of Cards. He has also worked on Andor, the acclaimed Star Wars series praised for its grounded tone and sharp intrigue—an experience that could translate naturally into the power struggles of Westeros.

Willimon has reportedly already submitted an initial draft. Executives at Warner Bros. Discovery are said to be highly enthusiastic about the direction so far. Still, excitement at the development stage doesn’t guarantee a greenlight—many projects enter development only to stall before production ever begins.

The Story Could Follow Aegon the Conqueror

Behind-the-scenes chatter indicates the film may focus on Aegon I Targaryen, remembered across Westeros as Aegon the Conqueror. Centuries before the events of the original series, Aegon forged the Seven Kingdoms into a single realm and became the first ruler to sit the Iron Throne.

His campaign is one of the most legendary chapters in the franchise’s lore. With his sister-wives at his side and dragons in the sky, Aegon subdued much of the continent in astonishingly little time—establishing the Targaryen dynasty that would rule Westeros for generations.

Notably, despite Aegon’s enormous importance to the world’s history, he has never appeared on-screen in person in any of the existing series.

Not Every Game of Thrones Project Makes It to the Screen

Franchise history shows that not every Game of Thrones spin-off concept becomes reality. HBO has previously developed multiple projects in collaboration with author George R. R. Martin, but only a select few have progressed into full productions.

The biggest success to date has been House of the Dragon, adapted from Martin’s Fire & Blood and set during the height of Targaryen power. Another upcoming entry is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on the Dunk and Egg novellas and set in a later era when the dynasty’s grip on Westeros was slowly weakening.

A Future Ownership Shake-Up Could Influence the Film

The film’s fate may also be shaped by corporate developments. Reports indicate that Paramount has won a bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery.

If the deal is finalized, the new leadership could ultimately decide whether the Game of Thrones movie moves forward. On the other hand, a high-profile theatrical project could be exactly the kind of brand expansion a new owner would want—especially for a franchise with proven global reach.

The Entire Game of Thrones Timeline Begins with Aegon

Targaryen history is the backbone of the entire Game of Thrones universe. The original series followed Daenerys Targaryen as she attempted to reclaim the Iron Throne. House of the Dragon portrays the dynasty at its peak. And A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place in a period when their rule was already edging toward decline.

But the true beginning—the moment that sets the course for everything that follows—starts with Aegon’s conquest. If the film does move into production, audiences may finally witness one of the most pivotal events in Westerosi history on the big screen.
